大切な友を失う日がいつかきてしまう・・・悲しいことですが、私達が動物と暮らすことを選んだその日から
背負わなければいけない宿命とも言えるでしょう。
ここに１篇の詩があります。心の奥のほうにしまっておきたい詩なので、ご紹介します。

原文は英文でしたので、私なりに和訳してみました。
かなり意訳もはいっていますので原文もいっしょにご紹介することにします

虹の橋

天国の少し手前に　「虹の橋」と呼ばれる場所がある。
生前　あなたと寄り添っていた動物が　死を迎えたのち　そこへ旅立つのだ。
虹の橋のほとりには　草原や丘が広がり　あなたの大切な友は　
他の仲間たちといっしょに　走り　遊んでいる。
たくさんのごちそうと水　そして燦燦とふりそそぐ陽光のもと
彼らは居心地の良い暖かさに包まれている。

生前　病気だったり　年老いていた動物たちも　
ここでは健康と若さを取り戻す。
ケガをしたり　身体が不自由だった動物も
かつての完全な力強い体に戻っている。
あなたが今も思い出す　夢のようなあの頃のように・・・

動物たちはみな　とても幸せで　満ち足りた時をすごしている。
たったひとつ　小さなシコリのような想いを除けば・・・
それは　別れを告げなければならなかった　かけがえのない人への恋しさ・・・


彼らはいつものように走りまわって遊んでいる。
だがある日　そのうちの１匹がふと立ち止まり　遠くを見つめる日がやってくる。
彼の輝く瞳は　しっかりと何かを捉え　やがて身体中が喜びで震える。
やがて彼は唐突にグループの輪から離れ　青々とした草原を疾走する。
どんどん速く　　もっと速く・・・

そう　ついにあなたは大切な友に再び巡り逢ったのだ。
そしてあなたたちは　二度と別れることのない再会にしっかりと抱き合う。
あなたの顔中に降り注ぐ友のキスの雨。
あなたは両手で愛する友の頭を優しく撫で　そして大切な友の
あなたへの信頼に満ちた瞳の奥をしっかりと見つめる。
ずっと昔に別れたけれど　決して忘れることのなかった特別な友の瞳を・・・

やがてあなたたちは　共に虹の橋を渡り　天国へ向うのだ。

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...
